Hi, we are the Mills librarians, Norma Stovall and Jan Higgs.
We are excited to be sharing the Mills librarian's position. We will both be here each week and our schedules change so that we can know and work with all of our Mills Mountain Lions. Between the two of us we have many years of experience sharing literature and teaching students. We look forward to seeing and helping our students and their parents in the library. We love books and learning and hope to instill this passion throughout the year's adventures. We hope you have a great year at Mills. See you in the library! |

The Birthday Book Club is a way to honor a loved one's birthday and to benefit the library as well. Download or stop by the library for a Birthday Book Club form if you are interested in recognizing a special someone.

Texas Bluebonnet Award Program
Every year, twenty books are selected for nomination for the Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA). The mission of TBA program is to encourage Texas children to read more books, explore a variety of current books, develop powers of discrimination, and identify their favorite books. From the 3rd – 5th grade patrons’ perspective, they are simply having fun reading, which is our unspoken goal. |

The children’s charge is to “Read 5 and Then Decide”, which is the TBA slogan or motto. There is always a variety of books on the list – Fiction chapter books, Biographies, Non-Fiction information or graphic novels, and Everybody picture books. |

"Each year the Texas Library Association presents a list of 20 recently published books for the students of Texas in 3rd-6th grade to read. Students who have heard or read 5 of the 20 books by the end of January are eligible to vote for their favorite book. Therefore, this is a very coveted award by children’s authors. And, this is a time students are able to voice their opinion about their reading choices. In addition, at Mills we have a further incentive to read these books. Students who read and summarize (2-3 sentences or so) the books are invited to attend a fun-filled Bluebonnet Breakfast where we play games, talk about books and enjoy blue snacks. 3rd graders need 10 summaries, 4th graders need 12 , and 5th graders need 14 summaries to attend. We will be reading some of the shorter picture books during library time so it should be fairly easy to vote in January. To attend the Bluebonnet Breakfast, however, requires some initiative on your child’s part but we encourage your child to join the largest reading club in Texas! Happy Reading!"

Be a Library Volunteer!
The Library is always in need of volunteers. There are always books to re-shelf, new books to stamp and label, shelves to neaten, student cards to check, and lots and lots of other library tasks. You can be a regularly scheduled volunteer - one that comes every week at a certain time (like with your student's class), or one that only comes for special events (like inventory or book fairs), or one that pops in whenever you're on campus. We're always happy to have you help our library.

New to Mills Elementary? You've come to the right place!
Students can visit the library every week for great book check-outs. Their classes will have a library lesson and/or read-aloud with one of our great librarians every other week. Pre-K through 1st grade students are allowed to check out 1 book every week. 2nd and 3rd graders are allowed 2 books each week. 4th and 5th graders are also allowed 2 books each week, but may check out more when needed for class projects. Parents are encouraged to get their own library cards with us - they are allowed up to 10 books! Library books are due back after 2 weeks. If a book is lost or damaged, we happily accept cash or checks made payable to Mills Elementary for its replacement.
